Individual Psychotherapy
In therapy we will work collaboratively to address your symptoms and concerns, such as sadness, anxiety, or worry. You may find therapy particularly helpful during times of transition or stress, or when trying to find new solutions to ongoing problems.
Adult and Adolescent Behavioral Sleep Medicine
Insomnia - if you experience difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, or if you do not feel refreshed in the morning, you may be suffering from insomnia. Cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is an evidence-based, short-term, and medication-free treatment that leads to significant symptom improvement in a short number of sessions. In treatment, we will work together to identify and target the specific factors that get in your way of good sleep.
Hypnotic discontinuation - if you rely on sleeping pills and would like to quit, CBT-I can be used to help you stop taking sleeping pills and supplements (in collaboration with the prescriber).
Circadian Rhythm Sleep-Wake Disorder –if you find that your preferred sleep schedule doesn’t fit the conventional or acceptable schedule, you might be experiencing a circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorder. This misalignment can result in undesirable outcomes, such as constantly being late to work or school, daytime sleepiness, or missing out on social, occupational, or recreational opportunities. Treatment may include education and guidance, use and avoidance of light, gradual change of bedtime and waketime, addressing sleep habits, and/or making changes in your daily schedule to better fit your biological needs, if appropriate.
Nightmares – if you have nightmares, you probably know how distressing they can be. Frequent nightmares are associated with sleep disturbance and daytime consequences, such as anxiety or depression. Imagery Rehearsal Therapy (IRT) is one of several evidence-based treatments for nightmares. Using IRT, I will help you rewrite and reimagine your dreams, until they no longer disturb you.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea – if you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea and need help adjusting to using your CPAP, I’m here for you. There are effective cognitive-behavioral interventions that can help you feel more comfortable using the mask, leading to more frequent and longer CPAP use, which in turn leads to better health outcomes.
Pediatric Behavioral Sleep Medicine
Childhood Insomnia – insomnia in childhood often presents as bedtime resistance, inability to fall asleep without an adult presence, and night wakings. Based on your child’s age, presentation, and your preferences, one or more behavioral interventions can be used to effectively address these problems. These interventions are typically brief and highly effective.
Nighttime fears, nightmares, and night terrors – different problems can make a small child refuse going to sleep or wake up screaming in the middle of the night. A thorough evaluation that includes interviewing a parent/caregiver, the child, and reviewing sleep logs will enable me to determine what problem(s) your child is facing, and together we will devise a treatment plan tailored to your child’s needs.
